1. Lift Station
1.1 Purpose:
To provide a systematic approach for the construction of a sewer plant lift station, ensuring adherence to design specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
1.2 Scope:
This work instruction applies to all personnel involved in the construction of the sewer plant lift station, including project managers, engineers, construction workers, subcontractors, and quality assurance personnel.
1.3 Responsibilities:
Project Manager: Oversee the overall construction process.
Ensure compliance with project schedule, budget, and quality standards.
Engineers: Develop detailed construction plans and specifications.
Provide technical guidance and support during construction.
Site Supervisor/Foreman: Supervise construction activities on-site.
Ensure adherence to safety protocols and quality control measures.
Construction Workers: Execute construction tasks according to plans and specifications. Follow safety procedures and guidelines rigorously.
Quality Assurance Personnel: Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with quality standards. Conduct inspections and tests as per approved procedures.
Safety Officer: Implement and enforce safety regulations and protocols. Conduct regular safety audits and inspections.
1.4 Materials and Equipment:
- Construction drawings and specifications
- Excavation equipment (excavators, backhoes, etc.)
- Concrete and reinforcement materials
- Piping materials (PVC, HDPE, etc.)
- Pumping equipment
- Electrical components (wiring, panels, etc.)
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- Review construction drawings, specifications, and permits.
- Conduct site survey and mark out construction area.
- Ensure availability of materials, equipment, and workforce.
1.7 Site Preparation:
- Clear the construction site of any obstructions or debris.
- Excavate the designated area to the required depth and dimensions as per drawings.
- Ensure proper slope and drainage for the lift station pit.
1.8 Concrete Works:
- Formwork and Reinforcement:
Construct formwork for the lift station walls and base according to design specifications.
Install reinforcement bars (rebar) as per structural requirements and drawings.
- Concrete Pouring:
Prepare concrete mixtures in accordance with approved mix designs.
Pour concrete into formwork, ensuring proper consolidation and leveling.
Monitor curing process and apply curing methods as per standards.
1.9 Pump and Equipment Installation:
- Pump Installation:
Position and secure pumps within the lift station chamber.
Connect piping and fittings to the pumps according to specifications.
Test pump operation and functionality.
- Electrical Installation:
Install electrical wiring, conduits, and junction boxes as per electrical drawings.
Connect pumps and control panels to power supply.
Conduct electrical tests and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards.
1.10 Piping Installation:
- Inflow and Outflow Piping:
Install inlet and outlet piping to and from the lift station.
Ensure proper alignment, slope, and connections to other sewer system components.
Pressure test piping to verify integrity and detect leaks.
1.11 Commissioning and Testing:
- Functional Testing:
Test pump operation, including start-up, shut-down, and capacity tests.
Verify flow rates and pressure within the lift station.
Conduct system integration tests with control panels and monitoring equipment.
- Safety and Alarm Systems Testing:
Test alarm systems, including high water level alarms and emergency shut-off procedures.
Ensure all safety devices and protocols are functional and effective.
1.12 Finalization and Handover:
- Site Cleanup:
Remove construction debris and restore the site to its original condition.
Ensure proper disposal of waste materials in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Documentation:
Compile all construction records, including drawings, specifications, and test reports.
Prepare operation and maintenance manuals for the lift station.
- Client Acceptance:
Conduct a final inspection with the client or relevant stakeholders.
Obtain acceptance and sign-off on completed work.
1.13 Safety Considerations:
- Implement and enforce strict safety measures throughout the construction process.
- Provide adequate PPE and safety training for all personnel involved.
